Carol Piner's Evidence of Insanity is an in-your-face life story that has the reader's juices flowing from the start. From beginning to end, the author flies through the episodes of her life at breakneck speed, and never looks back. Those who can [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] "hang with the flow" will truly appreciate the genius and genuine nature of the novel. Evidence of Insanity provides a unique [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] spin on the peaks and valleys of one's life.

The tone of the book in the beginning is distinctly comedic and earthy, despite the tragic events that occur; however, later in the book the tone becomes markedly less comedic, with limitless potential for discussion. One such hypothesis for the change in tone is Little Callie's evolving perception of reality. This tone in the second half may also represent Callie's own coming of age, while the events in her youth are indicative of her na?vet? and lack of understanding of the sometimes grim nature of life and death.

Though the names may have been altered, this book is essentially compiled from [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Carol's- or Little Callie's-memories. Myriad [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] characters come and go throughout Callie's life, all leaving their imprints on the author.

Evidence of Insanity outlines Carol's perspectives at different stages in her life, beginning as early as her [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] time in her mother's womb. She was part [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of a large family that included brothers Larry and Buck, and sisters Marybeth and Crystal. Unfortunately, the first to significantly leave a mark on Little Callie's life, and who sent her life down a potentially dysfunction road, was her father.

Carol's "Mama" was essentially the heart and soul of the family. Despite the fact that "Daddy" was habitually flirting with other women, Carol's Mama, Anna, would never hesitate to unleash her own beatings on the father as, "All five feet three inches tall, one hundred ten pounds of her seemed to grow upward and outward." Her loyalty to the family is later reflected in Carol.

Little Callie's youth was not only full of tragic events and dysfunctional father figures, but also of characters less threatening. Callie fondly reminisces about her time at Eagle's Nest, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] her childhood home, when she "discovered the 'friendly' ghost," Wilson. Then at the age of seven, in Morehead, Carol had her first experience with dancing, joining her parents at the Idle Hour. "Mama and Daddy could rock and roll like something off Dancing with the Stars. Believe me, these two knew the moves. When we went to the Idle Hour, she would head to the floor to put on a show. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] She didn't know how not to." These were one of the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] few times that Carol's Mama and Big Daddy actually got along. Dancing would be a fixture in Carol's life, combined with her animals that she truly loved, and from whom she didn't have to fear betrayal.

The author does an excellent job of keeping the reader in tune with each important character in the book. The fact that her main characters are developed [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] thoroughly is a testament to her dedication to the book and the message she's trying to convey.

Ultimately, Carol takes a trip of a lifetime to Costa Rica, where she comes face to face with the beauty of life, and it impacts her greatly. If there is a take-home message here it is that life "happens" and we must [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] go on. This does not mean the memories are forgotten, but that they are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] often temporarily tucked away in order to forge new ones. The only way to truly feel the frenzy of Evidence of Insanity is to read it. An ideal book for adults of all ages, this is one that provides a thrill-a-page and a can't-put-it-down-till-finished reading experience.
