Many adults eager to improve [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] their careers have [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] embraced the idea of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] distance learning and online degrees. The popularity of the online degree is based in large part on a flexible scheduling model and the added convenience of taking classes from the comfort of home. But do employers share the enthusiasm of students for the online degree path?
Once only a qualified "yes", the answer to this question [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] now more clearly favors the acceptance by employers of an online degree. In one sense, employers have little choice in the matter because of the sheer popularity of distance learning. More [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] than half of the country's colleges and universities now offer online [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] course and degree programs, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). While no hard figures are yet available, the Center estimates that online enrollment could top six million students in 2006. Data from 2004 - the latest available at the time of this writing - put enrollment at the University of Phoenix Online, the nation's leading online university, at [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] more than 115,000 students.
Given the magnitude of these numbers, it's difficult to imagine that employers can long overlook online grads as potentially valuable new employees. But an initial study of the phenomenon by Vault.com, a website specializing in career information, revealed a strong preference by employers for a more conventional degree path. Degrees requiring actual physical attendance at traditional brick-and-mortar universities were still preferred over online institutions by a substantial margin. An online diploma bearing the name of a well-known Ivy League or Big Ten school may well carry more weight than a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] degree from purely "virtual" institution in the eyes of some human resource professionals. Fortunately, name recognition and on-campus attendance isn't the whole story. According to more recent studies of hiring practices, human resource departments now appear to think more highly of accredited online degrees, putting them roughly on par with traditional brick-and-mortar degrees. The [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] key to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the attitude shift seems to be accreditation, a voluntary review process in which universities are evaluated by one of a half dozen regional accrediting [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] agencies. Successful accreditation ensures that an online college or university meets a uniform set of standards that applies to all institutions of higher learning - including traditional brick-and-mortar institutions as well as online universities. Visit the Department of education website at for a list of accredited colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Of course, not all human resource departments are looking for new employees. This is especially true when an existing employee wants to improve his or her level of education while continuing to work full time. Many employers encourage such employees to pursue online courses and online degrees and even provide a financial incentive for doing so. Nearly three-fifths of the students at the University of Phoenix Online, for example, receive some or all of their online tuition from their employer.
Online learning should continue to grow faster than any other education segment for the foreseeable future, says the National Center for Education Statistics. Assuming it's a regionally accredited college or university that grants an online degree, distance learning grads can be confident that their diploma will find favor in the workplace.
