Everything You Need to Know About Recreational Dungeness Crabbing
Crabbing is a fun activity that has delicious results when successful. The first step in a successful crabbing trip is to get a crabbing license. Make sure to get a Dungeness endorsement. Also check regulations for catch limits, acceptable crabbing times and any tidal information. Once you've done this, you are ready to get started!
Harvesting methods??Crab Pots can be purchased from many coastal-area hardware stores, fishing supply store or sporting goods stores. They are typically made of netting over an iron frame or from metal rods. Four or more doors are standard and are most effective if they only open inward. Pots contain a bait box and are secured with carabineers or zip ties to the surface line. Leaded lines are available that will sink on their own and unleaded lines should be weighted to avoid getting caught in a boat motor. Lines should be topped with a buoy labeled with the crabber's name and address.
Ring Nets are made of two hoops and cotton or nylon mesh. The upper hoop is larger than the lower one and the net lies flat when it reaches the bottom. Bait is kept in a box in the middle of the larger ring. Crabs can come and go easily, so [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] rings must be pulled to the surface quickly, forming a basket so they cannot escape.
Most pots should be checked every few hours to once a day while ring nets should be checked ever 30 - 45 minutes.
Bait??Many coastal-area grocery stores or bait shops carry crab bait. Crabs are scavengers and will eat most types of meat. Expired chicken is popular and generally works well as does canned [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] cat food. Chicken and other large pieces of meat work well in boxes while cat food can stay in the can with puncture holes. The crabs must be able to access the bait so they will stay in the pot.
Setting the pot??Crabbing is most successful when it coincides with the coming or going of the tide because the scavenging crabs move with the food carried in the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] water. Pots are often set with small motor boats, but can also be set with row boats in bays and protected areas. They are typically dropped in depths of 20-150 feet, so larger boats may have trouble in shallow waters.
Take the boat out a safe distance into an area that feels right. Lower the pot slowly, making sure no [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] legs, arms or other important items are tangled in the line. Make sure the pot hits bottom [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] - there should be some slack on the rope, especially if you drop it at high tide. Then clip on the weight about six feet from the buoy and drop the remaining rope [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and buoy [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in the water.
Harvesting??Once you make your way back to shore, decide how long you want to wait before bringing it back up. When the time comes, get back in the boat and bring some essential tools. A bucket, measuring device and crabbing license are essential, crab tongs and rubber gloves are recommended. If you plan to reset the pot, also bring bait so you do not have to return to the dock.
First make sure you have the right pot. Crabbing etiquette dictates that crabbers do not even touch another's pot. Respect other pots and yours should be respected in return.
Start pulling up the pot, making sure your weight is even in the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] boat. Row boats are especially prone to tipping with the force of the rope and pot pulling on the boat.
Bring the pot into the boat. If you have two people, one can row while the other sorts the crab, throwing in females and males that are too small. Use your measurer to make sure they are keepers and put the keepers in the bucket. Then re-bate the pot, find a good spot and lower it down again.
Cleaning??Once you return to the dock, you can either clean the crabs immediately or take them home to cook first. If you choose to clean at the dock, make sure to save the shells in case the game warden comes by.
Start by turning the crab over and inserting a knife quickly into the crab in the middle of it's abdomen. Remove, turn the knife 90 degrees and stab again. It may continue to move or twitch as the nerves die.
Once you are satisfied that it will not be able to pinch you, pull out the little triangular piece of shell that indicates it is a male. Then grab firmly onto one [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] half of the legs and loosen the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] shell. This often takes some loosening on both sides before the shell [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] will come cleanly off. Once the shell is removed, take out everything but the pure white crab meat. Often, sloshing the crab in the water will remove most of the gunk, but make sure to have a good grasp so you do not lose any claws.
Now you are ready to cook the crab. Take it home, start a pot of boiling water, add the crab, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] cook and enjoy!
